In order to develop an integrated river basin management policy in Kazaksthan, a project named "Action Programme for improvement of water quality in the Irtysh river basin ", was financed by the French Ministry of Finance (FASEP) and coordinated by IOWater.
This study was developed under the umbrella of complementary to a large project titled "Improvement of the environment for the sustainable development of the north-eastern region of Kazakhstan", defined by the government of Kazakhstan with the World Bank.The main objectives were to acquire a sufficiently precise knowledge of the state of the environment and of the needs to define priorities as regards works and equipment for future decision-making.
As this requires to federate comparable data issued by various producers, in order to have synthetic and coherent information, IOWater was in charge to study the possibilities to create an information system which will enable perform an integrated water data and information management on the Irtysh basin.
Feasibility study for the creation of the River basin information systems necessary for Irtysh River basin Management in Kazakstan. The following was achieved through IOWater short term expertises:
- Analysis of the existing situation
. Available data sources ;
. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of existing information ;
. Information collection, management and dissemination procedures ;
. Human resources ;
. Financial capacities for operation.
- Identification and organization of a network of partners willing to share their data.
- Definition of organisational and technical proposals for the creation of the Irtysh River basin Information System.
