The Eco Cuencas project MOOC is online!

19/11/2018

The Eco Cuencas project's Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is available online at the following link: https://www.oieau.org/mooc/eco_cuencas/.

Funded by the EU, the Eco Cuencas project implemented by 9 partners and coordinated by IOWater was carried out between 2014 and 2017 in three pilot basins in Latin America:

  • the transboundary basin of Rio Chira-Catamayo, shared between Ecuador and Peru ;
  • the basin of the Rio Grande II dam in Colombia, which supplies the city of Medellín ;
  • the Piracicaba, Capivarí and Jundiaí (PCJ) basins, which supply water to the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

The project has developed the theoretical foundations for a wide range of economic instruments and financial mechanisms for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Pilot actions have also made it possible to implement some of these tools in practice (fees for use and discharge, payments for environmental services) at several scales, by promoting coordination with IWRM instruments at the level of river basins (planning and participation in particular).

The lessons learned are presented in the MOOC in a progressive way for a synthetic pedagogical content including feedback and perspectives. It provides a concrete vision of these innovative tools, which are increasingly relevant in the context of climate change.
